The Nutritional Benefits of Vitamins and Minerals
The word vitamin literally comes from the word vital, meaning quite literally that vitamins are vital for keeping all of our bodily functions running. Vitamins are necessary in small amounts for normal metabolism and good health, making it possible for other nutrients to be digested, absorbed and metabolized by the body.
We can derive the nutritional benefits of vitamins and minerals through various types of food that make up the modern diet. The problem is that you can’t eat every food necessary for a proper nutritional balance. Our bodies separate the vitamins and minerals we need from the foods we consume. The problem is that with the modern industrialization of agriculture, many of these vital nutrients are in much smaller doses in present food supplies, if not completely stripped out all together. Due to this reality and other factors involving a range of diets and eating habits, various nutritional benefits have been found in supplementing our modern diets with the raw forms of the vitamins and minerals our bodies require.
Modern synthesis techniques have made nutritional supplements abundantly available. It is incumbent upon yourself that you educate yourself on your dietary needs and the benefits that the various nutritional supplements provide.
Insufficient intake of key vitamins and minerals ultimately leads to disease and a break down of bodily functions, and an over consumption of a given vitamin or mineral nutrient can also result in adverse affects. Always consult a health care professional when considering beginning regular supplementation of vitamins and minerals.
